About the award

The Texas Bluebonnet Award is a children's choice award run by the Texas Library Association, and its winner is chosen entirely by young readers. Each year a selection committee assembles a list of twenty books, five aimed at each of grades 3 through 6, drawn from a range of genres. The program exists to get children reading for pleasure, and its guiding idea is that students read at least five titles from the list before they cast a vote.

A new list is released each November. Students in public, private and home schools across Texas read during the school year, and voting runs from the fall into mid-January, with librarians collecting and submitting the tallies. The book with the most votes wins, the result is announced in February, and the author is honored at the association's annual conference in the spring. Tens of thousands of students take part each year.

Books published in the United States within the three years before the list is released, by living authors who are U.S. citizens or residents. Students in grades 3 to 6 who have read at least five listed titles may vote.

Usually announced in February.
