Twelve-year-old Jerome Rogers lives in a struggling neighborhood in Chicago. While playing outside with a toy gun, he is mistaken for a threat by a police officer and loses his life. As a ghost, Jerome watches his family grieve and meets other ghost boys, young people whose deaths were rooted in prejudice, including Emmett Till, who shares his own story. The only living person who can see Jerome is Sarah, the officer's daughter, and the two begin to talk about what happened and why. Jewell Parker Rhodes tells the story in short, poetic chapters that move between Jerome's life and his afterlife, and the book ends with a call for readers to notice injustice and speak up against it.
