Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to use The Top Book List, whatever device, browser or assistive technology they use.
Our standard
We build and test this site against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA.
What that means in practice
- Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator and a "Skip to main content" link.
- Text and controls meet AA contrast, including text placed over photographs.
- Book covers and other meaningful images have text alternatives. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Pages use headings, landmarks and lists so they can be navigated by structure.
- Nothing moves on its own without a way to pause it, and animation is reduced when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Pages reflow without horizontal scrolling at narrow widths and at 200% zoom.
- Forms have visible labels, describe errors in text and move focus to the first problem.
- Buttons and links are large enough to tap comfortably.
How we test
- Automated checks run against every page template, at phone and desktop sizes, each time the site changes.
- Our release checklist includes testing by hand with a keyboard, with screen readers, at 200% zoom and with enlarged text spacing.
Automated checks cannot find every problem, which is why the manual checks are part of every major release.
Known limitations
- Advertising. Ads are supplied by a third party and we cannot fully control their content. Each ad sits in a labelled region so it can be skipped.
- Booksellers. When you follow a link to a bookseller, you leave this site. We cannot vouch for the accessibility of their pages.
- Cover images. A cover's text alternative gives the title and author. It does not describe the artwork in detail.
Tell us about a barrier
If something on this site is hard or impossible for you to use, please tell us through the contact page, choosing the topic "Accessibility". It helps to include the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser and assistive technology you were using. We aim to reply within five business days.
