Award
The Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards have honored excellence in literature for children and young adults since 1967, making them among the oldest and most respected awards in the field. They are presented jointly by The Horn Book, the magazine devoted to books for young readers, and The Boston Globe. The awards began with two categories, fiction and picture book, added nonfiction in 1976 and later broadened to include poetry.
Each year three independent judges, chosen by the Horn Book's editor in chief, select a winner and up to two honor books in each category, currently Picture Book, Fiction, and Nonfiction and Poetry. Books must be published in the United States, but their authors and illustrators may come from any country. The winners are announced in early summer and celebrated in the fall.
Children's and young adult books published in the United States during the eligibility year, by authors and illustrators of any nationality.
Usually announced in June.
