About the award

The Carnegie Medal for Illustration honors outstanding illustration in a book for children and young people. Known for most of its history as the Kate Greenaway Medal, after the Victorian illustrator, it took its current name after 2022 and serves as the companion to the Carnegie Medal for Writing. Both medals are run by CILIP, the library and information association, with its Youth Libraries Group, and both are nominated and judged by librarians.

The medal dates to the 1950s; the earliest winner on the official list is Edward Ardizzone for Tim All Alone. CILIP members nominate books each autumn, and a panel of librarian judges announces a longlist in February and a shortlist in March, with the winner named at a June ceremony alongside the writing medal. Young readers in shadowing groups also vote for a Shadowers' Choice winner from the shortlist.

Illustrated books for children or young people, in English or a first English translation, first published in the UK or Ireland between 1 September and 31 August of the previous year, or co-published there within three months.

Usually announced in June.
