Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature
About the award
The Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literature recognize books that reflect Asian American and Pasifika experiences, histories, and cultures, judged on literary and artistic merit. They are presented by the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, an affiliate of the American Library Association, and were first given in 2001. Volunteer juries of librarians review submitted titles each year.
Awards are given in six categories: Adult Fiction, Adult Nonfiction, Young Adult Literature, Children's Literature, Picture Book, and Poetry. Each category now has separate Asian American and Pasifika selections, with one winner and up to two honor titles in each. Winners are announced in January, with the youth categories revealed during the American Library Association's Youth Media Awards, and honorees receive plaques at the ALA Annual Conference the following summer.
Books published primarily in English during the September-to-August award year by creators of Asian American, Asian Canadian, or Pasifika heritage, about those communities. Asian American and Canadian titles must be published in North America, while Pasifika titles qualify wherever they appear; self-published works are excluded.
Usually announced in January.
