When Hector finds one of his goats flattened in the field, he blames the legendary goat-sucking creature, El Chupacabras. A flower seller by the road offers him a magic powder to protect the herd, but Hector uses far too much, and his goats grow into enormous beasts that stomp toward town. His daughter, Carla, has a better idea: ask El Chupacabras for help. In Adam Rubin's comic retelling, the feared monster turns out to be a small, polite gentleman, and the story moves back and forth between English and Spanish as it goes. Crash McCreery's illustrations add plenty of slapstick, from sneezing goats to a chupacabras on a bicycle. The book won the Texas Bluebonnet Award.
