Best Books for 9th Grade

Typical ages 14–15

This page gathers books for ninth graders, typically 14 to 15 years old, and for the parents and educators who support them. As high school begins, many readers take on young adult novels with layered storytelling alongside classic literature that often appears in English classes, plus poetry, memoir and narrative nonfiction.

Award-winning picks come first, followed by subject collections and every book recommended for this grade. Our grade ranges reflect editorial judgment, not requirements. Teens vary widely in what they are ready for and drawn to, so the notes for parents on each book page are worth a look.

Tips for parents

Ask what your teen is reading for class and offer to read it too. Suggest a contemporary novel that pairs with an assigned classic. Respect your teen's choices while staying open to conversation. Check the For parents notes on each book page for content details.
