In the last days of the Vietnam War, Hằng takes her five-year-old brother, Linh, to the airport in Saigon hoping to reach safety, but in the chaos he is carried onto a flight to America without her. Six years later, in 1981, eighteen-year-old Hằng finally arrives in Texas as a refugee, with only an address for the family who took him in. On the way she meets LeeRoy, a young man from the city with dreams of becoming a cowboy, who ends up driving her to the small town where Linh, now called David, lives. Their reunion is not what she hoped for, because her brother remembers almost nothing of her or of Vietnam. Thanhhà Lại's first novel for teens alternates between Hằng and LeeRoy and won the 2020 Scott O'Dell Award.
