Firekeeper's Daughter is Angeline Boulley's debut, a thriller set in and around Sault Ste. Marie on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Eighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine, the daughter of a white mother and an Ojibwe father, has never felt fully at home in either her town or the nearby Ojibwe community. She plans to start college close to home while caring for her family, but after she witnesses a killing tied to a dangerous new drug spreading through the area, she is drawn into an undercover investigation. Using her knowledge of chemistry and of traditional medicine, Daunis works to uncover the truth while protecting the people she loves, and she has to weigh what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe woman. The novel pairs suspense with a rich portrait of Ojibwe language, culture and community, and is published for older teens.
