Best History & Social Studies Books for 5th Grade

Fifth graders, ages ten and eleven, will find nine award-honored nonfiction books here, from picture books to full-length histories. Phillip Hoose's Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice, a National Book Award winner, tells of a teenager who refused to give up her bus seat in Montgomery in 1955, and Teri Kanefield's Rebels, Robbers, and Radicals explains the Bill of Rights through real court cases. Other books cover the Japanese American incarceration, the boarding schools and the Black Lives Matter movement.
