About the book
Call and Response tells the story of the Black Lives Matter movement, from its founding by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi to the protests that spread around the world in 2020. Veronica Chambers, working with Jennifer Harlan and other New York Times journalists, places the movement within the longer fight for civil rights, with timelines of the struggle from the 1950s and 1960s and of Black Lives Matter from 2012 onward. Photographs, quotations and short profiles explain systemic racism, the deaths that sparked protests, and the young people who have led movements for change. Back matter includes interviews with movement leaders and suggestions for further reading. It was a 2022 Orbis Pictus honor book.
