About the book

In 1947 Shirley Temple Wong, a girl from a large and respected family in Chungking, China, arrives in Brooklyn, New York, to start a new life in America. Fitting in is far harder than she hoped. She speaks almost no English, the customs at her new school are confusing, and making friends seems nearly impossible. Then baseball fever sweeps through Brooklyn, and Shirley becomes a devoted fan of Jackie Robinson, the Dodgers star whose success as a Black player shows her what opportunity in America can mean. Following one eventful year, this warm and funny immigrant story about belonging, courage and finding a place in a new country is written for readers about eight to twelve.
