About the book
The first ten amendments to the Constitution promise freedoms such as speech, religion and due process, yet they were written by men who enslaved other people, and Americans have argued over what those rights mean ever since. Lawyer and author Teri Kanefield explains each amendment in the Bill of Rights through real court cases and the people behind them, from the early sedition laws and the Civil War to Prohibition, the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, the civil rights movement and gun control. Rebels, robbers, protesters, determined teenagers and ordinary citizens all appear in this illustrated history, which closes with a glossary and an index. The book was a 2026 Orbis Pictus honor book.
