About the book
Corn, chocolate, fishing hooks, boats and even the anorak all trace back to the knowledge of Indigenous peoples in North America and Mesoamerica. Deidre Havrelock, a member of Saddle Lake Cree Nation, and science writer Edward Kay survey that knowledge as it existed before 1492, with chapters on land management and ecology, transportation, communication, agriculture and food, medicine, clothing, architecture, mathematics and more. Along the way they connect older practices to modern science and offer simple activities and experiments for readers to try at home or in class. Back matter includes a glossary and a list of Indigenous science organizations. Illustrated by Kalila Fuller, the book was a 2024 Orbis Pictus honor book.
