Award
The Sydney Taylor Book Award honors outstanding books for children and teens that portray the Jewish experience with authenticity and high literary quality. The Association of Jewish Libraries created the prize in 1968 as the Shirley Kravitz Children's Book Award and renamed it in 1978 after the death of Sydney Taylor, author of the All-of-a-Kind Family series. Jewish content is required, but the author does not need to be Jewish.
A committee of Association of Jewish Libraries members selects gold medalists in three categories: Picture Book, Middle Grade, and Young Adult. Silver medals go to Sydney Taylor Honor Books, and the committee also names a list of Notable Books. On occasion it has given a Body of Work award to a creator for lasting contributions to Jewish children's literature. Winners are announced each January during the American Library Association's Youth Media Awards.
New books for children and teens, from picture books to young adult titles, that have literary merit and positive, authentic Jewish religious or cultural content. Jewish authorship is not required.
Usually announced in January.
