About the book
Grieving the death of her mother, college student Lilah goes to Rome hoping to reconnect with her grandfather, a man who has always refused to talk about his past. With the help of a young Roman named Tommaso, she starts digging into her family's history. In alternating chapters, the novel moves back to Rome during the Second World War, where Lilah's great-aunt Bruna, a young Jewish woman, joins the resistance and finds that her missions bring her back into the orbit of her childhood crush, Elsa. Jordyn Taylor weaves the two timelines into a story of mystery, romance, grief and courage. The book was named a 2026 Sydney Taylor Book Award honor book in the young adult category.
