Jason Chin

Jason Chin is an author and illustrator best known for picture books about science and the natural world. He grew up in Lyme, New Hampshire, and studied illustration at Syracuse University.

His first book as both author and illustrator, Redwoods (2007), began a series of detailed nonfiction picture books about places and big ideas, including books on coral reefs, the Galápagos Islands, gravity and the universe. Grand Canyon (2017) received a 2018 Caldecott Honor and a 2018 Sibert Honor, and Your Place in the Universe carries readers from everyday scale to the far reaches of space. He illustrated Andrea Wang's Watercress (2021), which won the 2022 Caldecott Medal, and Life after Whale, about the ecosystem that grows around a whale fall on the ocean floor, which won the 2025 Sibert Medal.

His paintings combine careful scientific detail with a strong sense of wonder, inviting young readers to look closely at the world.
