Award
The World Fantasy Awards recognize achievement in fantasy writing and art and are presented each year at the World Fantasy Convention. They were first given in 1975 at the very first convention, held in Providence, Rhode Island. Categories cover novels, long fiction, short fiction, anthologies, collections and artists, along with special awards for professional and nonprofessional work and a lifetime achievement award.
The selection mixes reader and expert input. People who attended the current or the two previous conventions send in nominations, and the two works with the most votes in each category go on the ballot. A rotating panel of judges then adds further nominees and chooses the winners from the full slate. Each year's awards cover work that appeared during the previous year.
Fantasy fiction and art that appeared during the previous calendar year, considered in categories by length and format.
