American Fantastic Tales gathers more than a century and a half of American stories of terror and the uncanny, selected by the novelist Peter Straub for the Library of America. The first volume runs from Edgar Allan Poe and his contemporaries through the pulp magazines of the early twentieth century, and the second carries the tradition from the 1940s to the present, taking in ghost stories, weird fiction and literary horror alike. Read together, the two volumes trace how American writers have used the supernatural and the strange to explore fear, guilt, grief and the unsettled corners of everyday life. The anthology won the World Fantasy Award in 2010.
