Award
The Carnegie Medal for Writing is the United Kingdom's oldest award for children's books, first given in 1936 and named for the Scottish-born philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, whose fortune built public libraries. It is run by CILIP, the library and information association, with its Youth Libraries Group, and it is unusual in being nominated and judged entirely by librarians.
CILIP members nominate titles in the autumn, and a panel of librarian judges announces a longlist in February and a shortlist in March before naming the winner at a ceremony in June. For most of its history it was known as the CILIP Carnegie Medal, and for a few recent years it carried a sponsor's name as part of the Yoto Carnegies. Young readers follow the shortlist through a shadowing scheme, and since 2019 their votes have produced a separate Shadowers' Choice Award.
Original works in English, or first English translations, written for children or young people and first published in the UK or Ireland between 1 September and 31 August of the previous year, or co-published there within three months.
Usually announced in June.
