Best Classics Books for 5th Grade

For fifth graders, classic novels offer longer stories with room for real stakes and memorable characters. This collection pairs lighthearted favorites with books that take on serious history. Superfudge brings Judy Blume's knack for family comedy, and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, winner of the Newbery Medal, follows a Black family holding onto its land in 1930s Mississippi. Together they show how wide the shelf of enduring children's literature is, and many of these titles work well for classroom discussion or a shared family read.
