About the book

Harold is a good-natured family dog who is not the type to look for trouble. Then his family brings home a baby bunny they found, and Chester, the household's highly dramatic cat, becomes convinced the new pet is a vampire. Chester sets out to prove it and protect the family, while Harold, who doubts the whole idea, tells the story and tries to keep up with his friend's increasingly wild theories. This short, comic mystery is told entirely from the dog's point of view and pokes gentle fun at horror stories. It is a classic read for children about nine to twelve and a fine pick for reading aloud around Halloween.

Grade ranges are editorial guidance. Every reader is different.

The vampire theme is played for laughs and the spooky moments are very mild. There is one slapstick scene in which the cat tries to stop the rabbit with a piece of raw steak.
