The medal is named for Robert F. Sibert, the longtime president of Bound to Stay Bound Books, and is administered by the Association for Library Service to Children. First awarded in 2001, it is announced each January alongside the Newbery and Caldecott Medals, and the committee may also name honor books. Folktales and other traditional literature are not eligible.
