Award
The Mildred L. Batchelder Award recognizes an American publisher for the most outstanding children's book first published in another country in a language other than English and then translated for readers in the United States. Its purpose is to encourage publishers to bring the best of the world's writing for young people to American children.
The award is named for Mildred L. Batchelder, a former executive director of the Association for Library Service to Children, which administers it. Established in 1966 and first presented in 1968, it has been given every year since 1979, and honor books have been named since 1994. Results are announced each January, and no award is made when the committee finds no book worthy.
Books for readers up to age 14 that first appeared outside the United States in another language, in English translations published in the United States during the previous year. New translations of works already published in English are not eligible.
Usually announced in January.
