Best Books for 2nd Grade

Second graders, usually 7 to 8 years old, are often ready to move from early readers toward their first chapter books. This page helps parents and educators find stories with short chapters, lively characters and a mix of humor and adventure, alongside picture books that still reward reading together.

Award-winning picks come first, then books sorted by subject, then the complete list of books in this grade range. Our grade ranges are editorial suggestions rather than requirements, and readers vary widely, so a child who wants an easier or harder book is simply following their curiosity.
