Red is a very old red oak tree that stands near an elementary school, home to owls, raccoons and other creatures. Once a year, people from the neighborhood tie wishes to Red's branches, which has made the tree a local tradition. Red has watched generations come and go, and usually just listens. But when a Muslim family moves in and some neighbors make them feel unwelcome, Red's quiet watchfulness turns to concern, especially for Samar, the family's lonely daughter. At the same time, Red's own future is in doubt, since its owner, Francesca, is thinking of having the tree cut down. Katherine Applegate tells the story in Red's gentle, funny voice, with illustrations by Charles Santoso, as a reflection on kindness, community and belonging.
Ages 8–12 · Grades 3–7
