What Stalks the Deep is a Gothic horror novella by T. Kingfisher and the third book in the Sworn Soldier series, following What Moves the Dead and What Feasts at Night. The series' narrator, Alex Easton, has no wish to travel to America. But an old friend, Dr. Denton, asks for help: his cousin has disappeared inside an abandoned coal mine in West Virginia, a place with a reputation for being haunted. Easton agrees to make the journey and join the search for the missing man. The novella continues the series' blend of Gothic atmosphere and horror. It is written for readers of adult horror and was a 2026 Hugo Award finalist for Best Novella.
