About the book
What I Saw and How I Lied is a young adult historical novel by Judy Blundell set in 1947, just after World War II. Fifteen-year-old Evie lives with her glamorous mother and her stepfather, Joe, who has come home from the war ready to start a new life. When Joe suddenly takes the family on a trip to Florida, Evie meets Peter, a handsome young veteran who served with Joe, and she falls for him. But Joe seems uneasy around Peter, and Evie begins to sense that the adults around her are keeping secrets. When a tragedy at sea leads to an investigation, Evie has to decide what she saw, what she believes and whom she will protect. The novel blends romance, mystery and the uneasy mood of postwar America. It won the 2008 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.
