About the book

When Elsie Edwards joins Mrs. Hanson's fifth-grade class, her new classmates decide quickly what they think of her. Elsie is overweight, she has a hard time fitting in, and nobody is eager to be her friend. What the other kids do not see at first is that Elsie is carrying serious troubles at home. As the school year goes on and they get to know her better, the class begins to learn that first impressions can be badly wrong. This honest, often funny classroom novel looks at teasing, loneliness, weight and family struggles from a child's point of view, and it gives readers about eight to twelve plenty to think about when it comes to fairness and kindness.
