My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Book 2 completes Emil Ferris's graphic novel, drawn to look like the ballpoint-pen notebook of its young narrator. Karen Reyes is a ten-year-old growing up in 1960s Chicago who loves horror films and pulp monster magazines and pictures herself as a werewolf. She lives with her older brother Deeze, an artist facing the military draft, and she is still trying to understand the death of her upstairs neighbor Anka, a Holocaust survivor. Teaming up with Shelley, a fellow monster-loving girl, Karen forms a secret club, the Eternal Guild of the Benevolent Undead, while she keeps investigating. The book explores family, identity and history through Karen's sharp and vivid drawings. It was a 2025 Hugo Award finalist.
