Mel Fell

Mel Fell is a picture book written and illustrated by Corey R. Tabor about a brave young kingfisher named Mel who is ready to leave her nest. Most birds learn to fly by flapping, but Mel takes a different approach: she leaps, and down she goes. As she drops, the story keeps readers wondering whether she is in trouble or exactly where she means to be. The book celebrates self-confidence and taking a leap of faith, with spare text and lively, colorful art that makes the most of Mel's long fall. It is a fun read-aloud for children about 4 to 8 years old and a gentle encouragement for anyone nervous about trying something new. Mel Fell received a 2022 Caldecott Honor.
