This illustrated history traces the Harlem Renaissance, the flowering of Black art, writing and music centered in the New York neighborhood in the early twentieth century. Laban Carrick Hill follows the Great Migration that brought new residents north, the debates between Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois, and the writers, musicians, editors and soldiers who shaped the era, including lesser-known figures alongside famous ones. Chapters also describe daily life on the streets, in churches and in jazz clubs, and close with the stock market crash and the Depression. Period art, photographs, poems, sheet music and advertisements fill the pages, giving readers a feel for the time. The book was a finalist for the National Book Award.
