Biography

Ursula K. Le Guin was a novelist, short story writer, poet and essayist best known for science fiction and fantasy that crossed freely into literary fiction. Born in Berkeley, California, she studied at Radcliffe College and Columbia University and later made her home in Portland, Oregon. Over a long career she published more than twenty novels, along with poetry, essays and books for children.

A Wizard of Earthsea (1968) began her Earthsea cycle for young readers: The Tombs of Atuan received a Newbery Honor, The Farthest Shore won a National Book Award in the children's category, and Tehanu won the Nebula Award. Her science fiction includes The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) and The Dispossessed (1974), each of which won both the Hugo and the Nebula, and The Lathe of Heaven (1971). Her later novel Powers won the Nebula Award, and The Other Wind won the World Fantasy Award.

Her stories explore gender, power, ecology and the possibility of other ways of living.
