Best History & Social Studies Books for 1st Grade

History for first graders works best as a good story about a real person, and these picture books deliver exactly that. Readers meet a brave horse who carried supplies for U.S. Marines in Sergeant Reckless, and an entrepreneur who built a business on a frozen treat in Ice Cream Man, both Texas Bluebonnet Award winners. Other picks introduce a Brazilian capoeira master, a disability rights activist and a Filipino immigrant who popularized the yo-yo. Several carry Orbis Pictus and Caldecott honors, and each one makes a natural opening for questions about fairness, courage and how communities change.
