About the book
We Are Green and Trembling is a novel by the Argentine writer Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, translated from the Spanish by Robin Myers. It reimagines the life of Antonio de Erauso, a real figure of the seventeenth century who was raised as a girl in a convent in the Basque Country, ran away, and went on to live as a man in the Spanish colonies of South America. After serving under a brutal conquistador, Antonio rescues two Guaraní girls held captive by a corrupt church official and flees with them into the rainforest. The novel takes the form of his letters to his aunt, the prioress of the convent he escaped, describing his journey, his past violence and his search for redemption amid the abundance of the natural world. It won the 2025 National Book Award for Translated Literature.
