About the book

L. R. Wright's first mystery opens with its crime: George Wilcox, an eighty-year-old widower in the small coastal town of Sechelt, British Columbia, kills a man he has known for decades. The question is not who did it but why, and whether anyone can prove it. Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, newly settled in Sechelt after years of big-city police work, comes to suspect George, and a quiet game of cat and mouse begins. Caught between them is Cassandra Mitchell, the town librarian, who is George's loyal friend and Alberg's new romantic interest. The novel launched Wright's Karl Alberg series and won the 1986 Edgar Award for Best Novel.
