About the book
In 1867, when Germany is still a patchwork of small kingdoms, eleven-year-old Boniface Schroll is an orphan sent to live with his uncle, the mayor of Graab, a remote mountain village. Shy and unsure of himself, he gets lost in a snowy forest on the way, and afterward he can only half remember a tall man in a black hat who appeared there. The villagers blame the feared Robber Knapp for a string of crimes, but Boniface begins to wonder whether Knapp is guilty at all. With the help of Frederika, a kind maid, and Christian, a boy who becomes his close friend, he sets out to learn the truth, even when it puts him at odds with the adults around him. Translated from German by Elizabeth D. Crawford, the novel won the Mildred L. Batchelder Award.
