About the book
The Invisible Parade is a picture book by Leigh Bardugo, illustrated by John Picacio, set on the night of Día de Muertos. Everyone in Cala's neighborhood is getting ready for a party, because this is the night the dead come back to visit the people who love them. Cala does not want to go. She is still grieving for her grandfather, and although she tries to hide it, the idea of the returning dead frightens her. As her family prepares to celebrate, Cala finds her way toward courage and a new understanding of loss and remembrance. Picacio's richly detailed illustrations bring the celebration to life. Written for ages 5 to 9, the book received a 2026 Pura Belpré Illustrator Honor and was a 2026 Hugo Award finalist.
