About the book

This haunting tale from the French West Indies is both a Caldecott Honor Book and a Coretta Scott King Award Honor Book for Illustration. "The story is filled with dark and glorious elements that take shape in Pinkney's impressive scratchboard-and-oil artwork, which is allowed its full range in dramatic two-page spreads".--"Booklist", starred review. An ALA Notable Children's Book. Full color.
