About the book
The Dead Are Arising: The Life of Malcolm X is a biography by Les Payne and Tamara Payne. Les Payne, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist, began researching Malcolm X in 1990 and spent nearly thirty years interviewing people who knew him, from his siblings, classmates and street associates to fellow prisoners, members of the Nation of Islam, police and FBI informants. After Les Payne's death in 2018, his daughter Tamara Payne, who had been his principal researcher, completed the book. It follows Malcolm X from his birth in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925 through his years in Boston and Harlem, his imprisonment and conversion, his rise as a leader in the Nation of Islam and his assassination in Harlem in 1965. It won the 2020 National Book Award for Nonfiction and the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Biography.
