The Daughter of Doctor Moreau is a novel by Silvia Moreno-Garcia that reimagines H. G. Wells's The Island of Doctor Moreau in nineteenth-century Mexico. Carlota Moreau has grown up on a remote estate deep in the jungle, where her father, a brilliant and secretive doctor, carries out experiments that have produced a group of hybrid creatures who share the estate with the family. Carlota's sheltered, carefully ordered life begins to come apart when Eduardo Lizalde, the son of her father's wealthy patron, arrives and sets off a chain of dangerous events. Blending historical fiction, science fiction and romance, the novel explores power, loyalty, family secrets and what it means to be human. It was a 2023 Hugo Award finalist for Best Novel.
