Wanda Gág, the author and illustrator of Millions of Cats, made her own translation of the Grimm brothers' tale of Snow White and illustrated it with soft, flowing black-and-white drawings. The familiar story is all here: a vain queen who asks her magic mirror who is fairest of all, a huntsman who spares the young princess, the seven little men who take her into their cottage in the forest, and the queen's repeated schemes to be rid of Snow White before a prince arrives. Gág tells the tale in a plain storytelling voice that stays close to the German original rather than the softened versions many readers know. Her edition was a 1939 Caldecott Honor book.
