About the book
Seven fox kits who want a truly frightening story are sent to find an old storyteller fox in a hidden cavern. The tales he tells follow two young foxes. Mia is separated from her family and must survive on her own, while Uly, mistreated by his father and sisters, is driven out of his home. Their paths cross a landscape full of danger, from a terrible sickness spreading among the animals to predators and humans, and slowly their stories begin to wind together. Drawing on classic horror writers, Christian McKay Heidicker's novel is built as a chain of linked tales, illustrated by Junyi Wu, and was named a Newbery Honor book.

Ages 9–12 · Grades 4–7
This is a genuinely scary book: animals face a deadly sickness, predators, hunger and loss, with some light body horror. One young fox is mistreated by his own family because of his disability. Reviewers suggest it for bold readers.
