About the book
One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This is the first nonfiction book by Omar El Akkad, an Egyptian-born journalist and novelist who grew up in Qatar and Canada and now lives in the United States. It takes its title from a post he wrote in October 2023, a few weeks into the bombardment of Gaza, which spread widely online. Drawing on his years of reporting on the War on Terror, the protests in Ferguson, climate change and the Black Lives Matter movement, El Akkad examines the gap between the West's promises of justice and freedom and the way those promises have been withheld from many people, including Arabs, Muslims and immigrants. Part personal reckoning and part political argument, the book considers what it means to be a citizen and a father in a time of war. It won the 2025 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
