About the book

Elizabeth is new in town and lonely at William McKinley School in a New York suburb, until she meets Jennifer, a classmate who announces that she is a witch. Jennifer agrees to take Elizabeth on as her apprentice, and the training turns out to be strange and strict: peculiar foods, a list of taboos to obey, and plans for a flying potion made from unusual ingredients. Elizabeth follows every rule at first, but the longer the apprenticeship lasts, the more she resents being told what to do, and the friendship is put to the test. Narrated by Elizabeth, E. L. Konigsburg's story of loneliness, imagination and friendship between two fifth-grade girls was named a Newbery Honor book.

No age or grade range recorded.

Grade ranges are editorial guidance. Every reader is different.

The witchcraft is pretend play between two girls, with odd food rules and a homemade potion. A pet toad is threatened but not harmed, and the story is otherwise gentle.
