About the book

Tonatiuh picture book biography illustrates the life of Jose Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican artist. Posada is known for his depiction of calaveras, which are prominent during the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). Although Posada is not the first to illustrate calaveras, he was the most prolific. Posada’s illustrations not only honored the dead but were also used for satirical political cartoons, and short rhyming poems. This nonfiction book not only offers a glimpse into Posada’s inspiration for his calaveras, but also how he became a staple in Mexico’s culture
