About the book
Ben, a young man working as a hunting guide, takes a wealthy client named Madec into the desert in search of game. When Madec carelessly shoots and kills an old prospector, Ben insists on reporting it. Madec, unwilling to face the consequences, turns on his guide: he takes Ben's clothes, water and gear and leaves him to die in the heat, keeping watch with a rifle so that he cannot reach help. Robb White's tense survival thriller follows Ben as he relies on what he knows about the land to stay alive, outwit the man hunting him and convince the authorities of what really happened. The novel won the Edgar Award for best juvenile mystery.
