About the book

Mary Golda Ross loved numbers from childhood, and she grew up to become the first female engineer at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, where she helped design secret airplanes and spacecraft in its top-secret Skunk Works division. Cherokee author Traci Sorell follows Ross from her days as the only girl in her high school math class through her years as a teacher to her engineering career and her later work encouraging Native Americans and young women to become engineers. The book frames Ross's life around four Cherokee values, and Métis illustrator Natasha Donovan's art brings her story to life. A timeline, an author's note and source notes follow. It was a 2022 Orbis Pictus honor book.
