About the book

Hummingbirds may be tiny, but they are among the most remarkable fliers on Earth. They can hover in one spot, fly backward and even upside down, and some eat about half their body weight in a single day. Suzanne Slade introduces a dozen species found only in the Americas, pairing one big action word on each spread, such as feeding or resting, with short facts about what the birds are doing. Thomas Gonzalez's close-up illustrations in pastel, colored pencil and airbrush show the birds sipping from flowers, sparring and perching among twigs. Back matter offers more about hummingbirds along with sources and suggested reading. It was a 2025 Orbis Pictus honor book.
